Totally Construction East Africa 2016 featured alternative construction materials for the built environment and technical training workshops, this year Totally Construction East Africa climbed to new heights for its 3rd edition. Hosting four events in one, the event featured the following important platforms:

This year the event was hosted by Kenya’s Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development and endorsed by Kenya Vision 2030, the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, the National Construction Authority of Kenya and the Kenya Property Developer’s Association. The opening address was delivered by Deputy Principal Secretary Moses Nyakiangora on behalf of the Principal Secretary of the State Department of Housing, Arch Aidah Munano.
This year’s programme highlighted the expanded production and use of readymix concrete across the region, from CIMERWA in Rwanda to Bamburi Cement in Kenya. Other programme highlights included the growing use of the LEED standard for construction and the opportunity to promote increased sustainability throughout the industry through the use of recycled or organic materials for construction.

Quick facts about cement consumption in East Africa
Kenya: 5.88 million tonnes of cement was produced in 2014 against cement consumption of 5.19 million tonnes.
Tanzania: Cement output rose by 18.9% in 2014 to over 3 million tonnes and is forecast to double to 6 million tonnes in the next year.
Uganda: Cement consumption is forecast to increase by at least 12% over the next 3 years, currently averaging at 35 kg per capita per annum.
Rwanda: Cement production capacity is expected to increase from 100,000 to 600,000 metric tons annually in order to meet local demand
